Based on data represented by one of the United State’s scientists, the Australian Great Barrier Reef is experiencing a wide range of bleaching. The last mass bleaching was experienced about 5 years ago. As of now, it is known to be 3rd biggest widespread ever since then.
The cause of such widespread bleaching is heat trapped that is triggered by many gases. That being said, the entire planet is becoming warmer due to it. The last two widespread bleachings that occurred in the year 2016 and 2017 had affected the majority of the barrier reef. Scientists are quite stressed to declare the current widespread to destroy more than what it did before.
Co-ordinator of NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), Dr C.Mark Eakin claims that the time for dealing with climate has come. In fact, if t is not dealt right now, then the problem will continue to persist. As a result, it could lead to severe damage to the entire reef as corals will be destroyed.
The Corl Reef Watch had captured the current data by closing monitoring the reef through sensors. As the predictions suggested mass bleaching of the reef, the situation was termed as intense.
What Eakin Suggest
Eakin mentioned that the damage caused in the year fo 2016 and 2917 had only a few certain spots that faced the bleaching, such as the northern and the southern area. Ever since that, a climate phenomenon had said to increase it. This event gets its name from El-Nino Southern Oscillation.
The phenomenon could increase the odds of weather that is extreme globally. To be more clear, El-Nino happened to be a cause because its characterization deals with Pacific Oceans warmer water. But, the current bleaching of the coral reef has no involvement of El-Nino.
For this reason, Dr Eakin is rather surprised and has more to worry about. Concerning that, he also mentioned that the current climate change has been unpredictable mostly. The upper surface level of the oceanic water has been warm or rather, has experienced a huge amount of heat. So, that has played a major role in affecting the coral reef. It has affected its thermal limits as a result.
Great Barrier Reef in Critical Condition
Coral reefs are an essential and important part of the ecosystem for which marine life is dependent on. It plays a vital role in that as it is home for more than 1500 types of aquatic species.
Economically, it is also an important resource for Australia as 5.6 million USD is being contributed to its economy every year. As of now, the current data shows that bleaching has occurred in the middle of February. It is now continuing its widespread by the end of March.
But now, the bleaching of the entire reef has subsided while the hot temperature of the water is also on a cooldown. However, the entire mass bleaching has damaged some parts of the coral reef which is now under critical assessment.
